2012 - Young Ringers Summer

15 Aug 2012

Michael Uphill has organised 3 days of ringing during August with plenty of helpers to get young ringers more practice over the summer holiday. On the 14th August, six ringers joined us at Limpsfield Chart, Godstone and Nutfield and the ringing ranged from call changes & plain hunt to more complex methods such as Single Oxford Minor and St Simons.

Four youngsters took advantage of the second of the three summer holiday events at Barnes, West Hill, Wandsworth and Wimbledon on August 16th, assisted by eight slightly/rather more experienced adults.

The lower than hoped for attendance enabled each to have a greater share of the ringing. Peter from Wimbledon rang touches of Stedman Triples and called touches of Grandsire Doubles. Alex from West Hill, Wandsworth worked on his Grandsire Doubles and covering while George from South Croydon plugged away at his Bob Doubles. But we were really kept on our toes by Joe from South Croydon, who, two days previously, with his mate James had rung three new methods, Stedman Doubles, St Simons Doubles and Single Oxford Bob Minor. Not only did he progress to ringing "affected" touches of Stedman Doubles. He also got us learning(!) and ringing New Bob Doubles which we successfully completed twice and Frodsham Bob Minor. We just about managed to finish the first attempt of the latter. Alas the strain was just too much for a band with combined experience of about 250 years and we didn't quite manage to complete the second attempt!

The President of the Central Council was heard to say that she was not entirely certain that Frodsham Bob Minor would catch on in Surrey but who knows!

There is another opportunity to join in on Thursday August 30th with a programme, still provisional at present, of Capel (1.30pm), Newdigate (2.45pm) and Buckland (4pm). Watch this space for confirmation. At present we have 6 youngsters and 7 helpers signed up for the afternoon. Contact Michael Uphill if you would like to come.
